My laptop is 15 years old, with only 8GB of RAM, but Firefox is handling >2K tabs over several windows just fine.
There must be an issue outside the browser.

I know, but these extensions are essential for circumventing censorship.
This is exactly, what I call “bowing to an autocracy”.
My all-time favourite is Kubuntu.
Installation and use is as easy as it gets.
Killing tabs is mean and cruel!
However, even with 100s of them, you just need to jump into the address bar and type some letters of the tab’s address and Firefox will offer you to switch to it.

That seems like a reasonable theory.
I once had an add on (don’t remember which, something with videos, I think), which slowed everything down.
I found it by disabling add-ons one by one.
